Being that we have family in the military we thought it an honor to make a cake for a wonderfully sweet wife named Jolynne. She called us and informed us of her husbands deployment and that she wanted to give him a big send off. So we made an Army themed cake and here is the sweet thank you letter that she sent us a little while after he had left.
Carrie,
I just wanted to say thank you for the wonderful cake. It was absoltely perfect! My husband loved it and loved all of the personal touches that you did. Thank you for making our last days together befor the deployment a little more fun!

A month or so ago we were contacted by the people from “Disney on Ice”. They asked us if we would make some cakes for the Princess Wishes show that would be coming to Salt Lake City.

Hmmm, let me think about this for a minute… ok done, OF COURSE!!! Being alittle girl once myself I was happy to take the job. They told us the main Princesses that they wanted the cakes to be themed after, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast- Belle, and Snow White.Off we went! It has been weeks of creating and dreaming of what a little girl would want her Dream Cake to look like. The story behind why they wanted the cakes was incredibly heartwarming, we were happy to participate. Five patients from The Shriners Hospital and Make a Wish Foundation were chosen to be a Princess. The girls were dressed in Princess costumes, and their makeup and hair done. They arrived in carriages for a grand “red carpet entrance” at the Energy Solutions Arena. The girls were greeted by the real life Cinderella, Snow White and Belle, from the “Disney on Ice” show. Many other little Princesses from the community also came to enjoy the festivities. Each was able to have their pictures taken with their favorite Princess and standing by their favorite cakes. A reception was held inside, where each of the 5 little Princesses were given her own 2 tier Princess cake to take home. It was wonderfull to see all of the little girls with their huge eyes and the joy just radiating out of their little hearts. I also really loved the show…

We wanted to share some pictures from one of our recent classes “Topsy Turvey Cakes” with everyone. I am so proud of our students and how quickly they catch on. I really do enjoy getting to meet all of the people that have the same interest and love of “sugar art” as I do. And it is so fasinating to see the different types of work and styles that they come up with!
Making the Topsy Turvey cakes is one of our favorite things to do here at Carrie’s Cakes. They have so much personality, you can really get to express yourself. So, it is truly a great time to see my students take over and create their own unique designs. I want to thank these women for joining me. It really is a priviledge to get to teach each of them. I especially enjoy making new friends with them. In this class my students were… Julie Romero, Marie Kangas, Julie Hill and Kellie Stephens.Keep creating girls, and have fun with every minute of it!TFL

We were so excited when we heard that there was going to be a Chocolate Wedding Cake Competition here at the South Towne Expo Center! Carrie’s Cakes was probably the first to enter, we were definitely eager to start creating. I am proud to say that we got into the competition so much that we entered 3 cakes! Here is a quick description of what we did…Carrie did a Whimsey style cake with a lot of delicious draped fudge and colorful striped bows and flowers, and chocolate truffles. She called it “The Mad-hatters Chocolate Fantasy.” Rita Biggers also entered, with her brightly colored, lime green and chocolate, ” Chocolate Decadence” It was a beautifully decorated work of sugar art. And the newest memeber of our team Disa Cuellar also wanted to join the fun! She did a very unique and very fun origami style cake which she named “Origami Garden in Chocolate”. We are so proud! Disa won an “honorable mention” award for the best tasting cake in the whole competition!!! Yeah!!! The pretty cake with the red roses and snowflakes was done by Lonnie Cato. We have some more pictures to be added in the next couple of days, of some of our other friends who also entered.

We would love to congratulate the winners of the competition! Our special friend, Susan Fox of Midway Country Corner won 1st Place with her gorgeous white chocolate roses. When asked how it felt to be the winner, Susan said ” It was an honor competing with such great decorators. I loved what the judges had to say to me. I can’t wait to do this again next year. Bring it on !!!
And another friend of ours Kelly Salmond of Kelly’s Confections in Ogden, won the 2nd Place with her absolutely elegant chocolate draping and roses and calla lilies. Kelly told us “I had such a great experience competing in the Chocolate Cake Competition. All the cakes were so different and amazing. I was so excited to place in the competition. I just became “giddy”! I’m still coming down off of “Cloud Nine” ! Come join us next year!
And we are very, very excited to announce that our own Disa won an “Honorary Mention” for the Best Tasting Cake! There were so many wonderful cakes that were there. It was so fun to see what all of the artists came up with. We were very impressed with all of the entries. Utah has so many very talented designers. We’d love to see them join our ICES -Utah Cake Club. Please contact Carrie if interested. And I really enjoyed seeing some of Carrie’s past students there!Great job everyone, we are so proud and happy for all of you. Keep up the fantastic work!
There was a 3rd place winner also, but I’m sorry we didn’t get her name or photo. Beautiful cake.
These are some of my students and their cakes. I am so proud of everyone. Thanks for looking join us back here later for more fun!~

The Days of Sharing went so well. Norm and Zane did the best job! Carrie came back, tired as can be, but said what a GREAT couple of days that it was. They were taught so much from how to create a Gorgeous Henna patern to Norm’s FAMOUS Coral Reef Cake. They even learned how to make Chocolate Curls (sounds tastey doesn’t it)!
So many people brought their own display’s to show, it was wonderfull to see all the work everyone does. I want to also say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to Norm and Zane! They made it so easy to put the whole thing together! Take care and TFL.

Several months ago we were approached by the OC Tanner Company to do a cake for their 80th birthday. -For those who don’t know- they are the worlds top jewelry makers, located here in Salt Lake City. It took a lot of time and planning but we finally did it! The only real request made was that the theme of the cake be in a 1920’s style perhaps something to do with peacocks. So as you can see by the picture we actually made one out of gum paste and set him on the center tier. The rest of the cake we did in “Peacock” colors of golds, blues and purples. This cake certainly turned out a “Jewel” if you know what I mean!
